My Uncle made sure to keep my sister and me out from under the Queen’s feet, which meant we were usually sent right to our rooms as night fell. Despite this, Gladiola and I became a bit of an amusement behind the walls of the estate. Known simply as ‘the lawyer’s nieces,’ we would deliver messages to the Queen’s other day staff. We both loved being accepted, enjoying the feeling of being needed in a way we never were at home.
